What to check when a ChatGPT Work file will not open

ChatGPT Work’s documented file workflow runs from source material to a generated document, spreadsheet, presentation or PDF, followed by review, revision and download. When that handover stalls, identify the unfinished step. The repair for a missing file is different from the repair for a file that downloads but will not open.[5]

The sequence below combines documented product controls with an editorial troubleshooting method. It does not diagnose a particular outage. Start by describing exactly what happens when you try to use the output, including any visible error message.

Find the point where the handover stops

A message naming Report-final.docx is only a statement about an intended output. Ask the assistant to inspect the actual file: whether it contains the agreed sections, whether the tables are present and whether its contents match the requested format. If only the attachment is missing, the immediate job is to deliver the existing file.

Separate the preview from the file

The desktop app supports previews of generated documents, slides, spreadsheets and PDFs; supported HTML previews can also show rendered output and source. Web Work lets you open or download a generated file for review. Those are different review surfaces, so a missing preview alone does not establish that the underlying file is empty.[1]

For a blank interactive visualization, OpenAI specifically advises waiting for generation to finish, reloading the chat once and then retrying. If it still fails, request a simpler result or fewer data points. Its export guidance says generated controls and formats can vary; asking for the underlying data in a simpler format is a documented fallback.[2]

Choose the fallback according to the job. If you need an editable spreadsheet, say so; a screenshot of its table will not give you editable cells. If the problem concerns one chart or one slide, name it and preserve the approved remainder. Supported desktop previews also allow annotations for targeted revisions.[1]

Ask for a precise repair

This is an example request, not a guarantee that every session can perform every check. It gives the assistant a defined finishing task. A useful response identifies any check it could not run instead of treating the filename or a confident completion message as proof.

Check the workspace when moving between devices

If you saved the deliverable in Space, look for that saved file there. OpenAI distinguishes your signed-in workspace from the spaces that organise pages and shared work. The workspace determines membership, settings and available apps; linked source files retain their original permissions.[4]

For synced Work tasks, OpenAI recommends checking the same account and workspace on both devices. Local computer access also matters: an eligible task may start a new turn in the cloud without the computer’s files when that computer is unavailable. Keep the source computer connected if the repair depends on its files.[3]

If the failure persists in the desktop app, the documented feedback route begins by typing / in the composer. Record the app version, operating system, execution environment and exact symptom; an existing chat can be included with feedback. Report whether the problem is previewing, downloading or opening the file, so the report identifies the failing operation.[3]

The finished handover should leave you with one clearly named, usable version of the requested file and a short account of the checks completed. For the example report, that means the five agreed sections and two tables are in the attached document, ready to open and edit.
