The next generation of financial AI products is beginning to look less like a chatbot with a connector and more like a data terminal with a reasoning layer. Announced on September 10, 2026, OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Financial Services includes hosted and indexed premium data from Daloopa, PitchBook, LSEG News and Crunchbase, while planning entitlement integrations for firms that already subscribe to providers such as S&P Capital IQ, LSEG, MSCI, Dow Jones Factiva and Moody’s.[1]
That architecture changes the buying decision. A stronger model can reason over a filing, but it cannot lawfully invent a right to private-market data, guarantee a feed is current or know whether a particular banker is entitled to see a restricted dataset. The product must combine model capability with licensed inputs, identity, permissions, provenance and a reviewable output.
What the finance product brings together
| Measure | Value | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Reasoning model | GPT-6 Astra | Used for retrieval, financial reasoning and artifact creation.Source 1Source 2 |
| Built-in data examples | Daloopa, PitchBook, LSEG News, Crunchbase | OpenAI hosts and indexes selected premium datasets.Source 1 |
| Existing entitlements | Shared sign-in integrations planned | Providers can recognise data access a firm already owns.Source 1 |
| Connector ecosystem | More than 50 connectors | OpenAI names Datasite, Box, Preqin, FactSet and Intapp among the broader set.Source 1 |
| Availability | Eligible financial institutions | The product is not described as a universal consumer feature.Source 1 |
The model is only one layer of the answer
A research response can fail even when the reasoning is sophisticated. The selected figure may come from the wrong period, a restated table may supersede the original, a private-company record may be stale or a note may change the meaning of an adjusted metric. Finance therefore rewards systems that expose the evidence path rather than hiding it behind confidence.
OpenAI says analysts can trace figures and claims to specific tables and passages and inspect the reconciliation and notes behind measures such as adjusted EBITDA. This is a stronger standard than a footnote pointing to an entire 200-page filing. It makes the smallest unit of evidence reviewable.[1]
The four products inside a financial AI answer
| Layer | Value delivered | Failure mode |
|---|---|---|
| Licensed data | Access to information the user is entitled to use | Unlicensed redistribution or missing coverageSource 1 |
| Retrieval | Find the relevant period, table, footnote and transaction | Plausible evidence from the wrong sourceSource 1 |
| Reasoning | Reconcile, calculate, compare and explain | Incorrect formula, assumption or interpretationSource 1Source 2 |
| Artifact | Produce a model, note, chart, slide or client material | Polished output that conceals weak evidenceSource 1 |
Model benchmarks do not settle data quality
OpenAI reports GPT-6 Astra scoring 69.9% on OfficeQA Pro, compared with 60.2% for GPT-5.6 Sol. That is a 9.7 percentage-point improvement, or about 16% relative to the earlier score. The benchmark tests information finding and analysis across US Treasury Bulletins. It is useful model evidence, but it does not validate every vendor feed, entitlement rule or institution-specific workflow.[1]
The real deployment evaluation should use known historical cases: an earnings model with a restatement, a transaction with conflicting dates, a private-company record with missing fields and an adjusted measure whose definition changes between periods. Reviewers should score both the conclusion and whether the system pointed to the exact evidence needed to audit it.
Entitlements become part of identity
A firm may have different subscriptions for different teams, regions and roles. Shared sign-in can make those rights portable into an AI interface, but it also creates a duty to preserve information barriers. OpenAI describes role-based controls, multiple workspaces, SSO, provisioning and exportable logs. Those controls need to govern the connected data as well as the conversation.[1]
The system should record which subscription authorised each source, which user requested it and whether the output may be shared outside the entitled group. A citation is not a licence. A correct answer built from restricted data can still be distributed improperly.
The terminal competition is about review time
Financial professionals already have databases and models. The advantage of an AI layer is reducing the time required to assemble evidence, test assumptions and turn analysis into a usable artifact. The measure should be cost per accepted research product: model usage, data licence, connector maintenance, reviewer time and corrections together.
The most valuable financial AI will not be the system that sounds most like an analyst. It will be the one that can prove where every important number came from, why the user was allowed to see it, how the calculation was performed and which uncertainty remains. In that market, the citation trail and licence architecture are not support features. They are the product.
