ChatGPT ads are testing a separate conversation with an advertiser’s AI

OpenAI is testing advertiser-sponsored agents that users can enter from a ChatGPT ad. Answer independence remains important, but a commercial dialogue also needs persistent sponsorship, a visible data boundary, sourced claims and explicit transaction authority.

OpenAI is testing an advertising format in which a person can open a separate conversation with a business’s AI representative directly from a ChatGPT ad. Sponsored Agents are in a limited alpha with selected advertisers. The format can help a user ask detailed product questions, while extending the commercial relationship across an entire dialogue rather than one labelled placement.[3][1]

OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT’s independent answers and run on separate systems. The answer appears first; paid units are labelled and visually separated below it. That separation is essential, but it is only the first boundary. Once a user voluntarily enters a sponsored conversation, the system needs to make the commercial relationship, data recipient and action authority visible throughout the exchange.[2][3]

The transition from answer to advertisement must be unmistakable

A reader may correctly understand that the original ChatGPT answer was independent, then carry that trust into the sponsored agent without noticing that the role has changed. The same interface, typography and conversational style can make two systems feel like one continuous adviser. A persistent sponsorship label should therefore survive every turn, not only the first click.

The agent should also identify whose interests it serves. “AI representative of Brand X” is clearer than a human-like name with sponsorship hidden in a small badge. If the agent compares products, it should say whether its catalogue contains only the advertiser’s offers, selected partners or a wider market. A comparison inside a closed catalogue is not an independent recommendation.

Ad relevance is not product suitability

OpenAI says the ad system can use the context and intent of the current chat, plus broader ChatGPT signals when personalisation is enabled. That can make an ad timely without making the product suitable. A user asking how to start running may receive a relevant shoe advertisement; the relevance system has not assessed gait, injury, budget or whether another product would be better.[2]

The same distinction applies to commercial agents. A well-informed brand representative can answer detailed questions about its own offer. It should not be presented as an impartial adviser unless the system has a genuinely independent mandate, a sufficiently broad comparison set and a transparent conflict policy.

The controls need to follow the user into the ad

  1. Keep a permanent sponsored label and advertiser identity on every turn.
  2. Show a data-boundary notice before the first message is transmitted to the advertiser.
  3. Separate product explanation from actions such as purchase, booking, application or account change.
  4. Require explicit confirmation for any consequential transaction and provide a complete receipt.
  5. Let the user return to independent ChatGPT to challenge a claim without forwarding that discussion to the advertiser.
  6. Retain a simple report route for misleading claims, unavailable prices or manipulative agent behaviour.
[2][3]

Conversational advertising could be genuinely useful. A person can ask a product-specific question instead of decoding a generic landing page, and a business can explain a complicated service without forcing every customer through the same funnel. The format will earn trust only if the handoff is explicit: independent answer, paid placement, sponsored conversation, authorised action. Each stage should look and behave like the different relationship it represents.
