Choose which AI features Firefox keeps in your browser

Keep useful translation or PDF assistance and choose which other AI features appear. Firefox’s desktop and mobile settings provide different ways to make that selection.

Firefox’s AI Controls panel lets you enable tools individually. Available on desktop since Firefox 148, it also provides a block for future AI additions.[1]

Our example setup keeps translation for foreign-language reporting while removing chatbot prompts from routine browsing. This documentation-based guide, checked on 11 October 2026, also explains the different controls on phones.

Make a deliberate desktop selection

On desktop, open Settings → AI Controls and turn on Block AI enhancements. Then set any feature you want to retain to Available or Enabled. These exceptions leave future additions blocked.[1]

Available means usable; Enabled means opted in. Blocked disables the feature and removes its entry points. Blocking an on-device feature also deletes its downloaded model.[1]

Keep translation useful without constant interruptions

Desktop translation runs locally. After the relevant language files are installed, supported content can be translated offline. Open a foreign-language page and choose the translation icon or Translate page from the browser menu; select the source and destination languages, then translate. Show original restores the page’s original wording.[2]

The translation panel’s cog separates several preferences. You can always translate one language, suppress offers for another, or exclude a particular website. Turning off Always offer to translate stops the panel opening automatically. These choices are useful when you want occasional translation without being asked on every visit.[2]

For a single passage, highlight the text and use the right-click translation command. The resulting panel can copy the translation or expand to the full page. If the translation control disappears, check that Translations remains Available in AI Controls and that the required language direction is supported.[2]

Another useful exception is PDF-image alt text: a description a screen reader can convey. The gradual rollout requires remote improvements to be enabled. Where available, choose Image alt text in Firefox PDF viewer → Enabled. Its model runs locally. After adding an image, review and edit the proposed description before saving; a first draft may miss the detail that matters in your document.[5]

Set up the phone separately

On Android, Block AI enhancements disables the covered features and their promotional prompts, including future additions. Mozilla says blocking AI-related experiments removes you from those experiments after restarting Firefox. For selective use, open an individual feature in AI Controls and change its switch. Translation appears only where supported.[3]

On iPhone or iPad, the global Block AI Enhancements switch removes the covered tools and prompts. To choose individually, Mozilla directs users to Settings and then Page summaries, Translation or AI Controls, depending on the feature. Its iOS guidance also distinguishes processing: summaries may run on the device on supported hardware, while other devices can use Mozilla-hosted services.[4]

Understand what the switch governs

Desktop AI Controls govern Firefox’s covered features and Firefox-provided AI in extensions. External AI services, websites, search results and traditional ranking systems have separate controls.[1]

A useful final check is an ordinary browsing task: open a page you want translated, use the retained tool and see whether the unwanted entry points have disappeared. This is a suggested check, not a reported product test. It ties the settings to the experience you actually want: chosen assistance at the moment it helps.
