A venue shortlist can wait until you open an app. A choice holding up the next step may deserve a text. Decide which kind of interruption you want before giving an AI assistant a new way to reach you.
OpenAI’s 28 October update introduces one-to-one dot texting through iMessage and Android RCS.[1]
Access is a limited beta for U.S. Pro users aged 18 or older, excluding Business and Enterprise workspaces. It may not appear for every eligible account. Message and data rates may apply.[3]
This walkthrough follows OpenAI’s documentation, checked on 29 October; we have not executed the setup. The film-club example below is invented.
Connect your number
In the ChatGPT desktop app, open your dot’s profile and select Texting. Enter your number, complete verification and save the contact card you receive. Send a message to begin.[2]
With iMessage, send from the verified phone number. On Android, enable RCS in your messaging app.[2]
Decide what earns a text
Ask for your preferred channel. When approval is needed, the dot sends a link for review in ChatGPT.[2]
Imagine you are organising a film-club screening. You have pasted two fictional offers into the conversation: Alder Cinema can host Tuesday; Mill House can host Thursday. You want time to read the comparison, but the date choice needs your answer.
Before work starts, ask the dot to restate that instruction. A message saying “I have an update” would leave the important question hidden. For this example, a useful interruption would identify the Tuesday-versus-Thursday decision so you can judge whether to answer immediately.
When trying this, check that the routine comparison stayed in ChatGPT and that the text named the choice you had reserved for yourself. If the distinction is missed, sharpen the instruction around that particular decision. The success criterion is whether the message helps you resume the work at the right point.
Stop the texts
Reply STOP to stop outgoing texts from your dot. To pause the dot itself, open its profile’s more-options menu and select Pause. Reset is a deletion control: it removes the dot, its conversations, saved memories and scheduled tasks.[3]
Keep channel preferences separate from permission to act. Asking for a draft does not authorise sending it; if an approved action remains blocked, check the task for a separate sign-in, connection or approval request.[3]
