Digital Green pays for Safaricom customers’ FarmerChat data in Kenya and Ethiopia. Its 15 October report describes how users can ask the farming adviser without buying a data bundle.[1]
The conversation can involve more than a typed question. In July, Digital Green described a rebuilt assistant that accepts speech and photographs and asks for clarification before answering. Its examples include asking about the size of a farmer’s land or requesting a picture.[2]
For the Ethiopian programme described by the Fund for Innovation in Development, the advisory material draws on Digital Green’s video library and expert sources. Public extension agents use the chatbot in farmer group meetings, with advice available in Afan Oromo. That arrangement gives the conversation a place within an existing advisory service.[3]
A four-week disruption to sponsored data in Ethiopia coincided with roughly 30% fewer image and voice queries and 13% fewer text queries. Digital Green reports no comparable fall on other networks, while stressing that the observation cannot establish causality.[1]
Different questions carry different costs
In Zimbabwe, Econet’s paid EcoFarmer service uses FarmerChat and shares revenue with Digital Green. Pilot data through 24 August show how question volume differs from the cost of serving it.[1]
Econet pilot: query share and serving-cost share
| Format | Query share | Cost share |
|---|---|---|
| Text | 52% | 22%Source 1 |

| Voice | 20% | 7%Source 1 |
Query volume alone cannot show how much the service costs to run. Sponsored data pays for the farmer’s connection; the operator service helps finance delivery.[1]
For an adviser that asks follow-up questions, access has to last beyond the first reply. A farmer describing a problem may need to add a detail, send a second photograph or correct a misunderstanding. A useful conversation requires room for that exchange; a single successful connection does not complete it.
