Flexport lets AI assistants turn a freight quote into a booking

Its autumn release connects an assistant to a shipper’s own account and rates. The useful detail is the complete route from cargo requirements to a priced booking, with tracking available in the same conversation.

Two 40-foot containers need to travel from Shanghai to Los Angeles. Before looking up a price, the assistant asks about pickup, the trading terms, the cargo-ready date and dangerous goods. The conversation in Flexport’s 29 September demonstration eventually produces a freight booking. The missing details are part of the work, not an inconvenience to be skipped.[5]

Flexport’s autumn technology release includes an MCP connection: a way for an AI assistant to use tools attached to the customer’s Flexport account. It supports finding shipments, checking rates and creating bookings from an AI workspace. This walkthrough follows the company’s current documentation and demonstration transcript; AI News has not made a live booking.[6]

The commercial attraction is that the assistant can work with the shipper’s own contract and spot rates. A logistics team can move from asking what is happening to a shipment to arranging another movement without rebuilding all the context in a separate conversation with a forwarder.[1]

Connect the account before asking for the freight

A Flexport account administrator first enables MCP access for the organisation. In the Flexport platform, the route is Business Profile, then Integrations, then MCP Connection. An administrator can also enable access during an initial connection from a supported AI workspace. Each active user then connects their own Flexport account from the assistant and signs in when redirected.[2]

In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors, find Flexport and choose Connect. Sign in to Flexport when redirected and authorise the connection. Team and Enterprise workspaces may also need their Owner to enable the connector.[2]

The user’s existing role determines the available actions. An Analyst has read-only access comparable to a Member; a Tracker has a narrower view. Admin, Billing and Member roles can use the instant-rate and booking tools. Connecting an assistant therefore does not give every employee the ability to commit freight expenditure.[3][4]

If connection stops at an organisation-not-enabled message, the account administrator needs to complete the first step. If a tool is missing after connection, check the Flexport role and the AI workspace’s connector settings. Flexport also publishes a remote server address for custom clients: https://mcp.flexport.com/mcp.[2]

From a lane to a priced shipment

In the demo, the shipper chooses port-to-port service, free-on-board (FOB) trading terms, a cargo-ready date and two containers without dangerous goods. The assistant resolves the ports, finds rates and itemises the chosen option. The user asks for extra detention-free days and a booking. After a final review and confirmation, Flexport returns a shipment link.[5]

That example covers a specific movement. The instant-rate tool supports full-container and less-than-container ocean freight, plus air freight; it excludes dangerous goods and road-only shipments. Users need to provide the route, timing and cargo information appropriate to the mode, rather than treating a one-line request as a complete shipping instruction.[4]

For a rate selected from search results, the booking must match the evaluated price and selected extras. A booking against a supplied client-rate identifier follows a separate validation route. Either creates a binding booking that cannot be undone through this interface. Where instant pricing is unavailable, the tools can request a quote instead.[4]

Keep the shipment in the conversation

After booking, the connector can retrieve a shipment by its identifier, name or tags and show the vessel, route, customs information and exceptions. It can also browse active shipments to surface upcoming work across the account. That makes the conversation useful beyond the moment of purchase.[1]

Ask precisely about dates. The tools distinguish arrival at the first port of clearance from delivery to the final destination. “Due at the port this week” and “due at our destination this week” can produce different lists when an inland journey separates them.[4]
