Google has added direct file editing inside the Gemini app. Users can generate an artefact, inspect it, type changes or select a passage for Gemini to revise, keeping the conversation and the work together. The 29 October release supports a wider range of formats on the web than on phones.[1][2]
The distinction is clearest in Google's examples. A user can generate a study guide as a PDF from uploaded notes, highlight a sentence or visual section and request a targeted rewrite. A spreadsheet can be generated and previewed before being opened in Google Sheets. Presentation material can be adjusted before export as PowerPoint or PDF.[1][2]
There is, however, an important platform asymmetry. PDF preview and editing are supported on both mobile and web. Google Docs, Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, plain text and code are currently supported through the new in-chat editing surface on the web only. A user working entirely from a phone therefore does not receive the same general document workspace as a browser-based desktop user. The announcement's broad list of supported file types can obscure that qualification.[1][2]
Two ways to revise a generated file
The first is direct editing: expand the file to a larger workspace and type or replace content. The second is conversational editing: highlight a particular portion and tell the model what to do with that selection. These are different controls. Direct editing lets a user make a precise correction without asking the model to infer it; conversational editing is useful when the change involves restructuring, synthesising or transforming material. The quality of that transformation still requires checking.[1]
Google describes the new controls as available wherever the Gemini app itself is supported, across its supported languages, including personal accounts and Workspace customers. That is an availability statement, not a promise that every supported format works on every device. A professional workflow may still need Google Sheets to validate formulas, PowerPoint to inspect slide geometry and a dedicated PDF application to confirm fonts, links or annotations.[2]
For enterprises, another detail matters: the Workspace announcement says there is no separate administrator switch for this particular capability. Administrators can manage access to the Gemini app, but cannot independently disable only the in-chat file workspace through a feature-specific control described in the launch. Organisations with different rules for chat and file editing may need process or data-governance decisions rather than assuming a granular toggle exists.[2]
This is a documentation-based account of the launch, not a hands-on test of export fidelity. A spreadsheet still needs its formulas checked, and a presentation needs inspection in its final format. The immediate practical gain is a shorter route from a generated draft to a deliberate edit, with the device restrictions kept in view.[1][2]
