Find a usable font match for lettering in Illustrator

Retype suggests fonts from pictured lettering. Apply a candidate to your own text, compare the shapes and save an editable Illustrator file.

An old poster can be a promising starting point for a type study, even when its editable file has disappeared. The exercise here is to set your words in a plausible font, compare them with the reference and keep the result editable.

Illustrator Jessica Miller used an earlier version of Retype while designing Adobe MAX’s 2023 enamel pins. Adobe’s account says a still-image search led her to Blenny Black. That is a useful model for the exercise: a promising typeface to work with, rather than proof that every letter in a reference has been recreated.[5]

Adobe introduced Retype among its AI-powered Illustrator tools. This documentation-based guide follows the current font-matching and live-text instructions; we did not run a matching test. You will create the editable text yourself.[6]

Use desktop Illustrator with the Retype panel available; Adobe’s current release page lists version 30.8.[7]

Build a small shortlist

Select your image or outlined text. Open Window → Retype, choose Find Matching Fonts, then click the dotted boundary around your target lettering.[1]

Filter between Adobe Fonts and fonts on your device. Star promising matches; use Click to add for an Adobe Fonts candidate.[1]

For missed lettering, draw a marquee around the undetected area. Adobe recommends a horizontal selection containing one font.[1]

Make the comparison editable

Exit identification. Use the Type tool to enter your wording on the artboard, then select the new text object with the Selection tool.[3][2]

In Retype, choose a result from the last scan or Show Favorite Fonts to apply it to that live text.[2]

Compare distinctive letters, not just the overall width. For an invented sample such as “Riverside 2026”, inspect the R’s leg, the numeral 2 and the spacing between letters. A good short headline match may become less convincing when your real wording introduces new characters.

Save the comparison with File → Save As, choose Illustrator (*.AI), name it lettering-study.ai and confirm the Illustrator Options. Keeping the native file preserves the editable work. If the reference image is linked, Include Linked Files embeds it in that saved file.[4]

Your useful result is now a small type specimen: the reference, your new wording and the candidate you can continue editing. The next design decision can concern spacing, hierarchy or colour, rather than another blind search through font names.
