Kimi Projects can hold 50 files. The model still decides which ones to read

Kimi’s persistent projects carry instructions, files and chats across a long-running task, but project files are selected on demand rather than fully loaded for every turn. Storage capacity is therefore not evidence of complete review.

Kimi Projects provides the missing product layer that many model comparisons overlook: a persistent workspace containing instructions, files and related chats. Every project chat carries that shared background. The limitation is in how the files enter the model’s working context. Kimi says project files are read on demand, with the model deciding which files it needs for the current question.[1]

That design is efficient because a 50-file project does not preload every document on every turn. It also means storage and attention are different promises. A file can exist inside the project, remain available to the model and still not be opened for the answer that depended on it.

Automatic context does not mean exhaustive context

The project injects global memory, project instructions and selected project-file content into the chat. “Automatically carries this context” therefore describes the workspace relationship, not a guarantee that the complete text of every file is inserted. Kimi’s help page explicitly says the model reads files on demand rather than preloading them all.[1]

A user can reduce ambiguity by naming the source files, asking the model to list what it opened and requiring citations to file names or sections. For an exhaustive task, use a staged workflow: inventory all 50 files, confirm their identities, process them in batches and reconcile the extracted claims before synthesis. A single broad question leaves source selection invisible.

Kimi Chat Projects and Kimi Work Projects are different systems

Kimi Work’s desktop application also has projects, but Kimi says those are separate from Chat Projects and do not share data. Kimi Work is a local-agent environment with browser operation, local file handling, scheduled tasks, Skills and several permission modes. Moving from a web project to the desktop agent is therefore not a change of interface around one shared project; it is a move into another workspace.[1][3]

The permission modes also change the risk model. Default mode asks before sensitive actions such as modifying local files or running code; manual approval asks before acting; fully automatic mode can proceed without those prompts. A project that contains useful context does not by itself define which actions the agent may take on the local machine.[3]

The largest context feature is also plan specific

Kimi’s membership comparison lists million-token K3 conversations only in the highest plan. All membership features share one credit pool, including Deep Research, PPT creation, Kimi Code, Kimi Work and Kimi conversations. A user may therefore have project storage available while the remaining credit budget limits how extensively the files can be processed.[2]

This is another separation worth preserving: project capacity says what can be stored; context length says what one conversation can carry; credits say how much processing can be purchased; source selection says what the model actually reads. A polished project interface can hide all four behind one apparent workspace.

Kimi Projects is evidence that Chinese AI products are developing richer workspaces rather than remaining simple chat boxes. Its limitation is also representative of modern AI workspaces: context is selected dynamically. The way to use that power well is not to demand that every file be injected every time, but to make selection and coverage visible when completeness matters.
