Keep a bass line’s low end with ChromaGlow

Explore Logic Pro’s AI saturation effect, preserve the deepest frequencies and compare the result within your song.

ChromaGlow uses AI to model studio hardware, adding harmonics. Bypass Below excludes frequencies beneath a chosen boundary from saturation. It requires an M1-or-later Mac and cannot run through Rosetta.[1][2][3]

Try this original exercise with a bass part you recorded: choose a twenty-second audio region containing low notes, higher notes and a short rest. Aim for a more audible melodic shape while keeping the low notes comfortable against the kick drum. Keep an untouched copy for comparison.

This guide follows Apple’s documentation, checked on 29 October 2026. The exercise has not been tested with audio.

Shape the effect

  1. Export your audio region via File > Export > 1 Region as Audio File. Keep normalisation off and Bypass Effect Plug-ins unchecked for both exports.
  2. Insert Distortion > ChromaGlow on the bass channel. Leave Low Cut off.
  3. Choose Modern Tube. Raise Drive gradually, keeping Level In fixed.
  4. Enable Bypass Below and adjust its frequency. Match the treated volume to the original with Level Out.
  5. Export the treated region with the same settings; save the editable project.
[1][4][5]

Raising the boundary leaves a larger low-frequency range untreated. It does not turn those frequencies down. Adjusting output gain separately makes the tonal comparison easier to judge.[1]

Listen across the whole phrase

Start the comparison with the lowest note, then follow the phrase upwards. Does its weight remain convincing? Can you hear the higher notes more clearly within the drums, or have they become distracting? Listen through the rest as well: an attractive sustained tone is less useful if the phrase loses its shape.

Write down one musical reason to keep the treatment, such as making the rising phrase easier to follow. If neither version wins clearly, keep the original and revisit the choice when the arrangement is further along.

Keep both exported versions with descriptive names and replay the chosen file before using it elsewhere. The useful result is a bass part that serves this song, together with an editable session you can return to.
