Australia’s National Transport Research Organisation is offering its 15-seat electric bus, Rita, for demonstrations and service trials. TIER IV said on 29 October that the partners had tested the vehicle on a dedicated track and tuned it for Australian conditions.[1]
The invitations extend to transport agencies, operators, councils and airports in Australia and New Zealand, including public-road trials. Rita has a driving system developed by TIER IV, whose wider software platform is built around the open-source Autoware ecosystem.[1]
Taking a trial onto public roads
Australia’s National Transport Commission says highly or fully automated public-road trials require a permit or exemption. The requirements depend on the state or territory. Those route-specific permissions are a separate step from an organisation offering its vehicle for trials.[2]
From seeing an object to anticipating movement
Autoware’s perception documentation illustrates the software tasks involved, without specifying Rita’s exact configuration. It describes neural networks detecting objects in camera images and lidar measurements. Tracking then links detections over time, assigning identities and estimating movement.[3]
Prediction considers where those objects may move next. The perception component passes its interpretation of the surroundings to planning. A moving vehicle therefore needs more than a label saying that an object is present: its position, motion and possible path help inform the driving decision.[3]
