OpenAI expanded ChatGPT advertising to 26 more countries on 21 October, bringing availability to 89. New markets include Argentina, Chile, Nigeria, South Africa, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The company says more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns since the service began just over eight months ago. Ads remain confined to Free and Go plans.[1]
An engineering account published the same day exposes an unusual constraint: an ad must arrive before ChatGPT finishes generating the response. A late placement is dropped for that turn. OpenAI says the answer does not wait for advertising. Server-side delivery and a displayed impression are different events.[2]
From a conversation to a candidate
A specially trained language model interprets the conversation and calls tools to retrieve and assess possible ads, updating its search as the context changes. It nominates candidates; an auction tool selects the winner and price. Budget, pacing, relevance and eligibility checks narrow what can reach the screen.[2]
Advertisers face several distinct hurdles. An offer must fit the current need, compete in the auction and arrive while the opportunity still exists. Improving one stage cannot automatically repair another: a higher bid cannot make an already late placement appear.[2]
The advertiser documentation explains how businesses express relevance. They can supply context hints describing suitable topics or conversations, but these are not exact-match keywords or a guarantee of placement. The system also considers the landing page, title and copy. OpenAI describes the auction as relevance-weighted and second-price, so bidding and the quality of the match both matter.[3]
The bill and the result
Reporting adds a timing wrinkle of its own. Impressions, clicks and click-through rate normally refresh about every 15 minutes, while spend can lag by seven or eight hours. A dashboard showing activity and zero spend may simply be incomplete. OpenAI also says review-crawler visits to landing pages are not billable clicks, even if an external analytics tool classifies them as paid traffic.[3]
The same guide separates campaign goals from charges. ChatGPT supports impression and valid-click billing. A conversion-optimised campaign using click billing still charges for valid clicks, even though it seeks a later action such as a purchase. Advertisers therefore need to distinguish the event they pay for from the outcome they hope to achieve.[3]
