How Pixel’s AI spots scam patterns during calls and messages

A warning can arrive while a suspicious conversation is unfolding. Google’s call, chat-notification and keyboard protections have different controls and availability, with a useful distinction between checking a conversation and sharing it.

In a case published by Google, an IT professional stayed on a convincing call from someone apparently representing his bank. A Scam Detection warning prompted him to hang up and check his banking app. The alleged suspicious charge was absent. This is a company-reported individual experience, illustrating what an interruption can accomplish.[4]

The feature looks for conversation patterns associated with fraud. Google says enabled call detection excludes conversations with saved contacts. Its February 2026 account also describes messaging models recognising gradual manipulation in fraudulent job offers and relationship-based investment approaches.[4]

Three places a warning can appear

Google’s 15 September 2026 Pixel Drop added US keyboard warnings and expanded chat-notification protection internationally. That puts assistance at different moments: when a message arrives and when someone starts composing a reply.[3]

The process

Find the relevant setting

For calls, update the Phone app, then open its three-dot menu → Settings → Scam Detection. A beep at the beginning and periodically thereafter tells participants that detection is active. The in-call menu can disable it for that call.[1]

Google lists US support from Pixel 6 onwards. In the UK it lists Pixel 9 and later, with Pixel 9a and 10a restricted to the US. The SIM must belong to a supported country and the phone must be in one.[1]

For chat warnings, open phone Settings → Security and privacy → More security and privacy → Scam Detection, then adjust Message scams. Google’s current region list includes the UK. Selecting Not a scam temporarily disables detection for that conversation.[2]

What happens to the conversation

Call analysis stays on the phone. Google says neither its audio nor its transcript is stored or sent elsewhere; Pixel 9 and later use Gemini Nano, with other local models on earlier devices. Detection can miss scams.[1]

Chat analysis runs in an isolated environment. Message content is not sent to Google unless you choose to share it after an alert. That optional report shares the selected message with common identifying information removed.[2]

Automatic analysis and voluntary feedback are separate choices. A warning can give you time to reconsider the conversation before carrying on.[2]
