The most useful interview practice starts with the role you want and things you have actually done. ChatGPT can help organise that material and ask follow-up questions, giving you a way to rehearse before another person is listening. Aim to finish with a few relevant examples and clearer explanations of your contribution.
This is a documentation-based walkthrough with an original fictional example. We have not tested whether the exercise improves hiring outcomes.
Build the preparation brief in text
Gather the job description and the CV or application you submitted. The National Careers Service recommends reviewing both, researching the employer and preparing examples from past experience. Keep the actual advert: it defines this vacancy more precisely than a generic list of interview questions.[5]
In a new ChatGPT text conversation, open the tools menu and choose Add photos or files. Attach your CV as PDF or DOCX and the saved advert, or paste their text under separate labels. Document uploads are available on Free and paid plans on web and supported mobile apps, subject to limits and account settings.[1][2]
For personal accounts, Settings → Data controls → Improve the model for everyone lets you turn off training on new conversations while keeping them in history. Remove contact details and confidential client information that the exercise does not need.[4]
Try this original prompt: “Compare this job description with my CV. Select four important requirements. For each, identify relevant evidence in my CV and where it appears, then ask me for missing details. Do not invent experience, qualifications, responsibilities or results. Wait for my corrections before writing interview questions.”
Read the resulting matches against both documents. If the CV says you helped with a project, change any wording that makes you its leader. Add a detail only when you can explain it from your own experience.
Give each example something concrete to demonstrate
Imagine an applicant for an administrator role whose experience includes volunteering at a community centre. The following is our fictional preparation table, not an actual CV or ChatGPT response.
A fictional applicant turns experience into practice material
| Job requirement | Experience available | Detail to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Organise changing priorities | Helped arrange weekly sessions | Which clash occurred, and how did you choose what to do first? |
| Maintain accurate records | Checked registration forms | What discrepancy did you spot, and how did you resolve it? |
| Communicate changes clearly | Contacted participants when a room became unavailable | What information did they need, and how did you confirm the new arrangements? |
For a question about past behaviour, the STAR structure supplies four parts: situation, task, action and result. The National Careers Service includes what you learned within the result, and notes that examples can come from work, home or volunteering. A relevant outcome can be explained without inventing a percentage improvement.[6]
Rehearse one question at a time
Ask ChatGPT to produce a short brief containing the role requirements and the examples you have checked. Paste that brief into a fresh chat. This gives the rehearsal its evidence directly as text.
Then write: “Act as an interviewer for this role. Ask one question and wait for my answer. Ask one follow-up about a detail I left unclear. Afterwards, tell me which requirement my answer demonstrated, what was missing and one change to try. Use only the experience in my brief. Start now.”
Answer in text, revise one weak part, and try again without copying your first response. For spoken practice, select Voice in the message bar and allow microphone access. Live supports text in that chat; options and allowances vary by account. The pasted brief avoids asking Voice to retrieve your CV.[3]
If the assistant interrupts a pause, ask it to wait until you say you have finished. That instruction may help, although OpenAI says pauses and background sound can still trigger a response. You can continue the exercise in text at any point.[3]
Keep a small, usable preparation sheet
After several questions, request a one-page sheet: three example reminders, one detail to practise in each, and two questions for the employer. Check any Voice transcript first: OpenAI says it may differ from the speech.[3]
For the fictional room-change example, a useful reminder might be “schedule clash → contact list → revised arrangements → confirmation”. That is enough to bring the experience back to mind. Practise telling it naturally, including what you did and why, then answer a follow-up without reading the sheet.
