Saint-Gobain’s cement researchers look beyond construction for new ingredients

An AI-assisted search has produced hypotheses for additives. The team is now testing the chemistry.

Saint-Gobain’s search for a new cement additive led researchers into other industries. Mojdeh Rastgoo-Lemaitre, the project’s digital acceleration manager, says Microsoft Discovery helped them connect possibilities they would otherwise have missed. The goal is less clinker, cement’s binding ingredient, while preserving strength.[1]

In Microsoft’s 20 October account, she describes gathering 62,000 patents and 44,000 abstracts, then reaching hypotheses in about six weeks. The molecules are being tested; physical development trials would follow if they perform as hoped.[1]

Why the chemistry needs tailoring

The purpose is easier to understand through an earlier industry account. Writing in February 2025, Chryso’s Lisa Barnard describes the challenge of using slag, calcined clay and other replacement materials: water demand, setting time and strength can change together.[2]

EnviroAdd is its range of tailored cement additives. It aims to improve reactivity and strength development so manufacturers can reduce clinker content. The account distinguishes these additives, used in cement production, from admixtures that change the behaviour of the concrete mix.[2]

Those demands make the chemical search specific. An ingredient has to contribute to a formulation that works with the materials a producer actually uses, over the time in which strength develops.[2]
