Shopify gives AI shopping assistants a route from search to a paid order

Shop MCP brings product discovery, carts, Shop Pay and order lookup into one connection. It gives developers a shorter route to a working shopping assistant while keeping each purchase tied to the merchant selling it.

Shopify launched Shop MCP on 13 October, giving compatible AI agents one connection for finding products, building carts and completing purchases with Shop Pay. Search covers more than a billion products in Shopify Catalog and needs no API key. Existing Catalog API integrations continue to work unchanged.[1]

MCP, short for Model Context Protocol, lets an assistant call external tools. Here it connects a conversation to product and transaction records. Ordinary software can use the same service without a language model, so developers can build their own shopping interface.[2]

Shopify opened its Universal Commerce Protocol and Catalog API to developers without prior approval on 17 June. October’s release packages shopping, checkout and Shop account functions behind one hosted connection.[3][1]

One conversation can contain several separate purchases

An assistant can search across merchants, but a checkout belongs to one seller. A shopper choosing items from three stores therefore gets three checkouts. Signing into Shop adds saved addresses, Shop Pay and access to recent orders; browsing and building a cart are also available while signed out.[2]

The process

Consider an illustrative shopping request for a waterproof jacket and a daypack. The assistant could put both into a shortlist, with a different seller for each. The useful output at that point is a comparison: which item fits the request, what its listed price means and where it comes from. Choosing both then creates two commercial relationships, even if the conversation presents them together.

Clothing shows why the product details matter. A search result represents a featured variant, such as a particular size and colour. Shopify tells developers to fetch the product again when the shopper selects it or changes an option. Its documentation also says a requested combination can be relaxed when unavailable, sometimes without a warning; the returned selection needs to match what the shopper actually chose.[5]

The merchant supplies the checkout total, including delivery, tax and applicable discounts. Before payment, the shopper sees the items, quantities and total and chooses an offered payment method. A merchant checkout link remains available for completing the purchase directly.[4]

The catalogue becomes part of the shopfront

For merchants, the consequential change is where a buying decision can take shape. An assistant can assemble its comparison from structured product records before the shopper visits a storefront. In that flow, details such as the actual variant, currency, seller and stock status carry much of the information a shop would otherwise explain on its product page.[2][5]

Delivery has its own boundary: the search documentation says that shipping to a country does not establish an arrival date. The checkout supplies delivery options, and the merchant confirms the final price and availability there. For a time-sensitive purchase, a useful assistant therefore carries the shopper’s deadline through to that later stage.[5]

Orders placed through an agent appear in the merchant’s Shopify administration like other orders. At launch, developers must poll for checkout status because the service has no webhooks. The integration needs to follow the transaction until the order is confirmed.[1]

A new connection for compatible assistants

Shopify provides connection instructions for Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code and other clients. Compatibility has a specific meaning: Shop MCP uses the 2026-07-28 protocol and its server/discover handshake. A client that supports only the older initialization process cannot connect through that route; developers can use the command-line tool or HTTP interface instead.[6]

The commercial opportunity is a shorter distance between a recommendation and a usable order. Shopify supplies the common shopping machinery; the assistant’s developer chooses how to make the comparison intelligible and carry the selected product into checkout. The experience can span shops, while the seller, total and order remain concrete records throughout.
