Turn a room scan into editable geometry with SketchUp

Use a LiDAR-capable iPad running iPadOS 18 or later, with SketchUp for iPad access, such as a Go subscription. Install the app and sign in with your Trimble ID.[2][3][4]

This walkthrough follows documentation checked on 20 October 2026; we have not performed a room scan.

Capture one room

1. Choose Create new, then Scan in the expanded toolset.
2. Pan slowly up, down and across the walls, following the onscreen guidance. Tap Done and wait for processing.
3. In Tags, show the Apple RoomPlan output and hide Canvas. RoomPlan supplies simplified edges and faces, including door and window openings; Canvas supplies textured geometry.
4. Inspect the grouped output in Outliner. Compare a familiar doorway or window with the captured opening.

Why the room becomes simpler

Apple’s original 2022 RoomPlan account explains the inference behind this kind of model. Neural networks detect walls and openings in camera and depth data. Wall estimates begin as lines in a view from above, then gain height; detected doors and windows are placed on wall surfaces. A separate detector represents furniture with three-dimensional boxes. Combining those estimates lets the system impose relationships, such as keeping a furniture box from cutting through a wall. Those boxes describe an object’s position and size without reproducing every curve of its surface.[5]

Finish with Menu → Save as. Name the model and choose its location. Return Home, then use Open From to reopen the saved file and check the room is there.[4]

Report an error or suggest a correction
