SpaceX’s AI division takes the revenue lead

Its third-quarter results show a changed business mix, with cloud agreements and Cursor contributing to growth.

SpaceX’s AI division, reported as Super Intelligence, became its largest business by revenue in the quarter ended 30 September. The results, released on 20 October, show how differently the divisions turn sales into operating profit.[1]

The AI division includes advertising. Its revenue rose 830% year on year. SpaceX attributes the growth to cloud agreements, Cursor and Grok adoption. Cursor supplied $608 million from its 14 August acquisition through 30 September.[1]

How compute became a product

The previous quarter’s filing records the earlier stage of that change. SpaceX signed cloud-service agreements worth $14.1 billion and recognised $1.6 billion of incremental AI infrastructure revenue in Q2. Customers were paying for access to computing capacity.[2]

The company’s definition of contracted sales is useful here: it covers the enforceable, non-cancellable period, including recognised and deferred revenue. It excludes later periods that a customer or SpaceX can cancel. The contract total therefore measures a different thing from sales recognised in one quarter.[2]

This gives the expansion a concrete commercial explanation. Capacity built for AI can be sold to other customers, while models and applications provide additional sources of demand.[2]
