Supermicro raises its sales estimate on stronger AI demand

A changing customer mix helps explain the margin improvement.

Supermicro said on 20 October that revenue for the quarter ended 30 September should reach $18.5 billion–$19.5 billion, above its $14.5 billion–$15.5 billion guidance. The server supplier attributes the increase mainly to demand for AI platforms.[1]

It also raised expected gross margin to 12.0%–12.5%, from 10.4%–10.8%, citing customer and product mix. The figures are unaudited estimates and may change as the company closes its accounts. The results call is scheduled for 3 November.[1]

A different comparison with June

The preceding June quarter produced $11.1 billion in sales and a 17.5% gross margin. The full financial year ended 30 June had a 10.8% margin on $39.1 billion in sales. One particularly profitable quarter can sit well above the annual average.[2]

Gross margin measures the share of sales remaining after product costs, before other expenses. In its August results, Supermicro linked improving profitability to a richer enterprise customer mix. Which customers supply the revenue matters alongside the total sold.[2]

The new estimate beats Supermicro’s forecast while remaining below June’s gross margin.[1][2]
