Tesco has started taking its AI meal-planning assistant beyond its employees and into customers’ shopping routines. Its interim results, published on 8 October, confirm that wider customer rollout began in September, following an April colleague trial.[1]
The April trial was launched to around 280,000 colleagues. Tesco’s current customer documentation names the feature Meal Planner: it helps with recipe inspiration, meal plans and checking needed ingredients, then can add products to an online basket or a shopping list.[2][3]
Basket building makes the commercial proposition more specific than simply offering dinner ideas. A meal suggestion creates a need for ingredients; Tesco is putting help with that decision in the same service where a customer assembles an order. Our reading is that the assistant gives the retailer a chance to participate before the household has finished writing its shopping list.
That fits the strategy set out around the launch. Tesco places the assistant in the section of its interim report devoted to more personalised customer relationships, alongside Clubcard and tailored offers. The report confirms the rollout’s start, but gives no assistant-specific figures for customer use, completed baskets or savings.[1]
Access is being expanded to selected accounts during the beta. Tesco says customers who do not see Meal Planner have not yet received access; the September start date therefore describes a gradual rollout.[5]
For eligible customers, Tesco’s documented route is to update the app, switch to its Online section using the control at the top of the home page, and look for the Meal Planner button near the bottom. This is the retailer’s published access path; we have not tested it in a customer account.[4]
The final choice between adding products to a basket and saving them to a shopping list is useful. It connects the dinner idea to a purchase without requiring every planning conversation to become an online order.[3]
