Turn a spoken to-do list into organised tasks with Todoist Ramble

Speak what you need to do, then inspect the tasks it creates. A small planning exercise shows how to separate the day you will work from the date something must be finished.

Todoist’s experimental Ramble feature extracts tasks and their details as you speak. Its language models interpret dates, projects and priorities, while distinguishing a new task from a spoken correction.[1]

Current mobile features require Todoist iOS 25.11.17 or Android 11962 onwards, microphone permission and an internet connection.[1]

This documentation-based exercise uses an imaginary community art evening. The example is designed to leave you with a small, inspectable task list; it is not a recorded test.

Capture a short list, including a change of mind

Open Quick Add and tap the waveform icon. Speak while tasks appear in preview. Correct or remove them by voice, then tap the checkmark to finish. On web or desktop, finish with Add tasks.[1]

Try this with an existing project, substituting its name: “Add these to my Art Evening project. Call the community centre on 14 October at 10 am. Order easels on 15 October. Ask Priya to send the poster. Move the call to 11 am. Remove the poster task; I already asked her.” These are suggested words, with dates to adapt.

You are aiming to keep two tasks: the call at the revised time and the easel order. Look for a leftover poster task, a duplicated call or a time attached to the wrong item. Keeping the first attempt small makes an error easy to recognise before capturing a longer list.

Give each kind of time its own job

The process

Todoist keeps the work date and deadline separate. For a paid account, open the saved task and choose Deadline to inspect or set the cut-off. A recurring date can schedule repeated work towards one fixed deadline.[4]

A duration requires both a date and time. On iOS, open the task’s Date field, choose Time, enable Add Duration and select the interval. Android uses Date, Add time and the Duration toggle. Save the change. Todoist caps a single duration at 24 hours.[5]

Treat that interval as your estimate. For the easel order, include measuring the room and comparing delivery dates if those belong to the job. A task taking 20 minutes of screen time may still depend on an answer that arrives tomorrow.

Know what your account will capture

Beginner and Pro Legacy accounts share ten monthly sessions with Task Capture Assist, resetting on the first day of each month, UTC. Pro and Business offer unlimited sessions subject to fair use. A session counts only when at least one task is found.[2]

On Beginner, dictated deadlines and durations are ignored. Ramble cannot create subtasks or custom reminders.[1]

From a Monday, typed “Friday” means that week’s Friday, while “next Friday” means the following week. When correcting a task, open Date and select the calendar day you intend.[3]

Leave the session with commitments you can act on: a call, a purchase and enough time to do them. The useful habit is a brief spoken capture followed by a quick review of the resulting plan.
